Description
Layman's description
This project is part of a recently interest in study pro-social behaviors in relation to situations of instrumental helping (IH). The notion of IH is regarded as having two parts: a cognitive component, which allows recognition of target and situation in those who help, and a motivational component that cause interest to help someone to reach a specific goal and it may also produce some satisfaction because of the success of other in reaching its goal, even without identifying their own emotional or immediate needs. The main focus is to analyze how IH mechanisms evolve, describing how cognitive and motivational mechanisms contribute to individual adaptation in different situations. We consider sex and gender since it was previously demonstrated that is necessary to establish their effect on helping behavior (Monk-Turner, Blake, Chniel, Forbes, Lensey, & Madzuma, 2002).Research will be exploratory and conducted through an experimental design with 60 boys and girls (boys: 50%, girls: 50%), belonging to three age groups (3 years, n = 20, 4 years, n = 20 and 5 years, n = 20), living in urban sectors of Bogota. Six tasks will be applied in three different situations of IH.The main goals are: 1. to describe the behavior of IH in difficulty, effort and inequality situations, 2. to understand the relationship between IE behaviors and difficulty, effort and inequality situations, and 3. to find differences between groups of age and gender.
