Abstract

All children living with a life-limiting and/ or threatening condition or illness –regardless of any circumstance– should have access to palliative care, active total care of the child’s body, mind and spirit that also provides family support. The World Health Assembly established that palliative care is part of the right to health, urging health systems to integrate it into universal health coverage. However, access to pediatric palliative care is not a reality for everyone, particularly in developing countries where the disparity between the need and the reality of its offer accentuates, as is the case of Mexico. This article seeks to evaluate the state of development of pediatric palliative care in Mexico by 2024, in accordance with the components of the model proposed by the World Health Organization, adapting the indicators and systematizing the available information, to subsequently carry out a critical narrative analysis that allows informed reflection for action in areas of opportunity.
