Abstract

Intractable hiccups constitute a rare symptom with a significant impact on the quality of life of oncology patients, making it necessary to conduct research with the main objective of describing the available evidence related to pharmacological and non-pharmacological treatments documented in cancer patients experiencing chronic intractable hiccups, aiming to create clinical guidelines. A panoramic review was carried out following the PRISMA guidelines (scoping review), which included patients diagnosed with cancer and experiencing intractable hiccups as a reported symptom, as well as pharmacological and non-pharmacological treatments used in the study. Articles that did not address treatment for intractable hiccups, those without abstracts, unavailable full text, articles in languages other than English and Spanish were excluded. In the critical analysis of the literature, variables were defined in pharmacological and non-pharmacological treatments, with the safe option of adding other lines of medication or non-pharmacological management, such as phrenic nerve radiofrequency intervention, surgical resection when there is a causal lesion, and as an alternative measure, acupuncture. In terminal and refractory situations, initiation of sedatives should be considered. Finally, further studies with higher evidence are required to enable comparisons.
