Resumen
Objective: To explore the experiences of Colombian adolescents and their parents after a type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1D) diagnosis. Method: A descriptive qualitative study using content analysis was conducted in Bogota, Colombia. Between May and June 2024, a total of 36 participants were enrolled, distributed into two focus groups with 16 adolescents and three focus groups with 23 parents. Semi-structured interview transcripts were analyzed systematically to identify common themes across all participants. The study adhered to ethical principles in research. Results: Six themes were identified: (1) experience of an initial emotional impact, (2) changes in family dynamics, (3) the need to learn diabetes management, (4) reliance on external support, (5) the importance of empathetic and knowledgeable healthcare professionals, and (6) ongoing challenges in managing the condition. Conclusion: The findings highlight that living with T1D requires emotional, behavioral, and social adaptation. Comprehensive, family-centered interventions that foster resilience, self-management, and emotional support are essential to improving outcomes for both adolescents and their families.
